The Neighborhood
The King William District, named by German settlers, was once irrigated farmland that belonged to the Mission San Antonio de Valero. During the 1800’s it became an elegant residential area filled with large, impressive mansions shaded by towering Cypress trees. In 1967 the area became Texas’ first Historic Neighborhood District. In recent years the area has blossomed with art galleries, restaurants and museums and has been refurbished to its original glory and splendor. The King William District is a part of Southtown and is bordered by the loft conversions and warehouse district of the Blue Star Arts Complex and Lavaca, the oldest existing neighborhood in San Antonio.
Southtown, once described as Texas’ most eccentric neighborhood by Texas Monthly magazine, encompasses the King William District, the Blue Star Arts Complex, and the historic Lavaca neighborhood. It is an edgy, bohemian neighborhood lined with art galleries, eclectic shops, one-of-a-kind restaurants, coffee shops, and bars. Southtown’s First Friday, a gallery walk with live music and craft vendors, attracts locals and visitors alike. Be sure to explore this unique area of San Antonio, where arte es vida. |
